What It’s About: The newest expansion for Anachrony, a heavy worker placement game involving time travelling, as well as a new box that fits everything to-date. The new expansion Fractures includes: a new location with new worker spots; a new mechanic called Blinking that allows players to teleport to a 2nd worker placement spot with the same Exosuit; a new resource called Fracture Devices; a new faction called The Path of Unity, including new Exosuit miniatures; and a new, revised solo mode.
How It Works: Played over 4-7 rounds depending on player count, Anachrony sees players recruiting various types of workers (Engineers, Scientists, Administrators, and Geniuses) who are skilled at different tasks, and sending them out wearing space suits to take actions and gather resources. Take additional resources and create a time paradox, and then its up to the player to go back in time during future turns to replace said resources. Failing to replace them before the end of the game results in a penalty of deducted points. There’s also a fair amount of lore involved, variable player powers for the alien factions depending on which ideological Path they’re associated with (Harmony, Dominance, Progress, or Salvation), and modules associated with different timelines and time paradoxes. On a personal note, this is easily a Top Ten game for me, and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes worker placement games, well-produced and heavily thematic games, and who isn’t afraid of longer games with a higher level of complexity.
Comparisons: Other complex/heavy worker placement games include: Agricola, Alchemists, Caverna: The Cave Farmers, Caylus, Dominant Species, Dungeon Lords, A Feast for Odin, Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, and Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar.
