Project: Alice in Wordland: Curiouser and Curiouser

Designers: Chris Darsaklis (Alice in Wordland, Poisons, When I Dream), Spyros Koronis (Alice in Wordland)

Artists: not credited

Publisher: Drawlab Entertainment (Project: ELITE, Sherlock: Last Call, When I Dream)

Genre/Mechanisms: events, expansion, novel-based, party game, real-time, variable player powers, word game

Player Count: 3-8

Solo Mode: no

Complexity: light

Risk: medium-high

Summary: “Curiouser & Curiouser expansion introduces 4 new characters (the King of Hearts, the March Hare, the Duchess and the Jabberwock) and a new Event mechanic with quirky happenings every round affecting scoring and the character abilities. A mini game might even be added. Every round, players change their character and a new Event is drawn, changing either the rules or the scoring of the round. Then, according to the rules of the base game, three Forbidden Letters and a Discussion theme are drawn. The player to the left of the Queen of Hearts presses the teapot to start the timer and the game begins. Each player has to say a word, suitable to the Discussion theme while avoiding the Forbidden Letters before the time runs out. If they successfully do so, they reset the timer and the next player has to give their own word. If someone doesn’t say a suitable word in time they are out for the round and when only one player remains the round ends. The longer each player stays in a round, the more points they are awarded.

In the party game Alice in Wordland, players take the roles of characters from Alice in Wonderland, each with their own unique abilities and all invited to the tea party of the Queen of Hearts. They have to follow her mad rules of discussion, saying words in particular themes under the pressure of time.”

Publisher: Smirk & Dagger Games (Cutthroat Caverns, Dead Last, Nevermore)

Genre/Mechanisms: card game, card play conflict resolution, deck building, end game bonuses, fantasy, fighting, hand management, interrupts, passed action token, variable player powers, variable set-up

Player Count: 3-5

Solo Mode: no

Complexity: medium-light

Risk: medium-high

Summary: “An unconventional deck-builder that is highly interactive as you constantly deflect Hexes around the table. You are not building a resource engine so much as constructing your deck to deliver the types of interactions you want to have with other players. Will you specialize in forcing discards to deprive them, focus on negation magic, attack their Willpower with direct damage – or take on chaotic and possibly dangerous spells to build Victory points into your deck at great risk to yourself? Begin as one of 6 unique Battlemages specialized in their own magical discipline. Then, tailor your deck to your strategic tastes and in reaction to emerging opportunities. Curse and counter-curse your opponents into submission… without being Hexed yourself by the wild magics that have since passed beyond your control. Plus, newly conjured spells are not put into your discard pile, rather than forcing you to wait for their return, but are placed directly into your hand. You can play them immediately – right when you need them most.”

Artist: Racknar Teyssier

Publisher: Baron Jon Games

Genre/Mechanisms: card game, take that, trick-taking, turn order: random

Player Count: 2-5

Solo Mode: no

Complexity: light

Risk: HIGH

Summary: “A revised edition of Best Candy on the Block with an updated deck and rule set. It uses ranked cards with multiple candy themed suits like chocolate and marshmallow depicting different treats that you may receive while trick-or-treating. Each hand, players choose a favorite flavor from 3 cards dealt from a separate flavor deck. Each trick you win, and each card you take that matches your favorite flavor gives you 1 point. However, each hand, the player who won the most tricks does not earn points for tricks they took because of a tummy ache, they still earn points from cards they took with their favorite flavor. Additionally there are Prank cards that can be played instead of treats. Pranks are worth -1 point at the end of the trick to the person that took them, and a trick with a prank rotates the leader of the next trick to the right of the winner. There are also Non-Candy cards which can be used to avoid winning a trick and King cards which have powers that can change how the trick they are played to works. The game ends when one player has reached at least 31 points. The player with the most points, wins.”

Publisher: Play For the Future

Genre/Mechanisms: auction: turn order until pass, dice rolling, economic, environmental, investment, trading

Player Count: 1-6

Solo Mode: yes

Complexity: medium-light

Risk: HIGH

Summary: “Europe, end of 20th century. Our economy runs entirely on fossil gas and coal-fired power plants. Climate change is a fact. Which region will have sustainable (non-fossil) electricity production first and wins the game? Each game round, the electricity demand (in GW) in your region increases due to the fate of the Dice. It’s up to you to build power stations to produce the required GW demand. This provides you with income, with which you can eventually close the old fossil power stations and replace them with sustainable power stations that do not emit CO2. You can trade GW surpluses and GW shortages with the other players or External Markets to balance supply and demand. So are you going to increase sustainability quickly (with the risk of GW shortages), or are you more careful (at the risk of being late)? The region that is the first to produce more GW than the GW demand and has closed all its fossil power plants, wins. But beware, wind and solar energy sometimes only generate half of their GW power peak.”

Project: Illiterati

Artist: Audrey Jung (Rival Restaurants)

Publisher: Gap Closer Games (Rival Restaurants)

Genre/Mechanisms: cooperative game, real-time, simultaneous action selection, trading, word game

Player Count: 1-5

Solo Mode: yes

Complexity: medium-light

Risk: medium-high

Summary: “A real-time, co-operative word game in which players work together to form words and bind books. The game takes place in three-minute rounds, and before the round begins each player draw seven letter tiles from the draw bag. Once the countdown begins, players can talk and trade letters as much as they want with one another and the library to try to achieve their goal. Once time ends, if the library contains too many letters — and this threshold is based on your difficulty level — then you trigger a burn event. Flip all of these letters face down, then remove one of them from the game, then discard excess letters to the discard bag. If you burn too many letters, you lose the game. If you didn’t burn any letters and you’ve completed your goal, flip your red book face down and draw a blue waterlogged book to give yourself a new goal. Once all players have completed two books — or three or four depending on your difficulty level — draw one more book, the Final Chapter, with all players needing to complete this challenge in the same round. If all players meet this goal during the same round, you win; if even one person fails, another villain attacks, then you draw new tiles to start another round. You can discard and redraw up to seven tiles at the start of a round, but you must draw a second illiterati villain card that round — and if the villain deck runs out, you lose.”

Project: League of Dungeoneers

Designer: Michael Lundstedt

Artists: Kevin Richard John Berry, Dominick Critelli, Mark “Warpaintcobra” Turner, Obsidian Fantasy Studio, Paper Mage, Refluo, Robert Adrian Hillman, Scott Betts, YorkBerlin

Publisher: von Braus publishing

Genre/Mechanisms: action points, action / event, adventure, ancient, cooperative game, dice, dice rolling, dungeon crawler, exploration, fantasy, hexagon grid, medieval, miniatures, modular board, movement points, mythology, paper-and-pencil, print & play, role-playing, scenario / mission / campaign game, solo / solitaire game, square grid, state check resolution, travel

Player Count: 1-4

Solo Mode: yes

Complexity: heavy

Risk: HIGH

Summary: “A detailed dungeon crawl and party management game. The game is designed to be a solo/coop game but could be played with a game master as well. The main task of the game is to develop your characters both by gaining experience but also by finding gold, equipment, magic and legendary items that can help you in your quest. The game is set in its own fantasy universe, containing many of the races and monsters that you would expect from a classical fantasy setting. You could either run the campaign supplied with the game or run any of the 18 single quests. All dungeons are procedurally generated, and all monsters and treasures are randomized making the quests different every time you play them. There is however a theme for each quest you embark upon so don’t expect to find a goblin among the undead in a crypt. There are 46 different room and corridor tiles, each with details about furniture and 5 different large seized objective rooms. All rooms have different furniture and a chest is likely to contain gold or magic items, where for instance a bookshelf is more likely to contain magical scrolls. Party morale and sanity are two important factors to monitor in the game. Meeting fearsome monsters and springing deadly traps will take its toll on the mental state of your heroes and too much strain will give your heroes unwanted disorders such as claustrophobia, arachnophobia or stress syndromes. This will make them less effective and maybe even a liability for the rest of the party. To remedy this, you will need to rest in between quests. If you can’t afford to rest due to lack of funds, maybe that stressed out Dwarf will have to stay behind during the next quest, forcing you to solve the task with a skeleton crew. Characters are designed around several stats such as strength and dexterity but also around skills such as Pick lock or Heal. Depending on their profession the heroes will excel in some of these, while being quite useless in other. Through levelling, you will also unlock talents which will boost certain areas of your character and perks which are powerful boosts that can be used a limited number of times. There are more than 80 talents and perks in the game. As your heroes levels up, the monsters they meet will be tougher as well. Combat is an essential part of the game and is designed to promote movement and prevent those bogged down battles of attrition. With several types of attacks available, both for monsters and heroes, combat becomes more flexible and less of a chore. Add to this the decision if you should evoke that special perk that could change the outcome of the battle or save it to the next. Finally, each dungeon has a threat level. This will increase as the Dungeoneers make their way through he dungeon. Making noises such as bashing down a door, or maybe screaming because of your stress syndrome, is a bad idea. This will increase the threat level, which in turn increases the chances of something bad happening. Maybe you will trigger a wandering group of monsters or set of a trap? It can also give the monsters unexpected boosts during combat.”

Genre/Mechanisms: cooperative game, grid movement, maze, modular board, move through deck, novel-based, open drafting, pick-up and deliver, puzzle, solo / solitaire game, variable player powers

Player Count: 1-5

Solo Mode: yes

Complexity: medium-light

Risk: HIGH

Summary: “A co-operative board game set in a cursed library. The play space is a grid of 25 octagonal tiles that can rotate and flip, revealing (and changing) parts of the library. Some tiles spawn literary terrors, which players need to defeat by drafting different book cards from their hands. These book cards each feature a fictional or historical woman with a combination of six different skills. Team up different cards to defeat specific terrors, then travel through the library to place the terrors back on the correct shelves. The curse is still at work in the library, however, undoing your good work, so make sure that you don’t run out of time or let the library become overwhelmed. On your turn you can pick up cards, trade cards, flip or rotate floor tiles, move down a lit path (as shown on the floor tiles), capture a terror, or put a terror back in the right shelf. You have three actions available with the option to donate one action to another player. After each player turn, a curse disturbance card is drawn, which disrupts the playing area by rotating a tile or spawning a new terror. When all six shelves have been filled with a captured terror, you win; if the deck of curse cards runs out or six terrors are left on the library floor before this happens, the game is lost.”

The game is fully cooperative, so the Villain and Environment aren’t run by a dedicated player, but rather are controlled by turning over cards from their decks and following the instructions on those cards. Each Hero, Villain, and Environment are represented by a deck of cards. Heroes and Villains also have character cards, which provide their Hit Points and other information specific to that character. The game starts with the Villain turn, then each of the Heroes in turn order clockwise around the table. The round ends with the Environment turn. After the Environment turn, repeat the round, starting with the Villain turn. The game continues in this order until the Heroes save the Multiverse, or the Villain defeats the meddling Heroes, one way or another.

Summary: “Munchkin Presents Batman features more than 250 cards based on characters and settings in DC Comics’ Batman universe.

Munchkin is a satirical card game based on the clichés and oddities of Dungeons and Dragons and other role-playing games. Each player starts at level 1 and the winner is the first player to reach level 10. Players can acquire familiar D&D style character classes during the game which determine to some extent the cards they can play. There are two types of cards – treasure and encounters. Each turn the current players ‘kicks down the door’ – drawing an encounter card from the deck. Usually this will involve battling a monster. Monsters have their own levels and players must try and overcome it using the levels, weapons and powers they have acquired during the game or run away. Other players can chose to help the player or hinder by adding extra monsters to the encounter. Defeating a monster will usually result in drawing treasure cards and acquiring levels. Being defeated by a monster results in “bad stuff” which usually involves losing levels and treasure.”

Summary: “A customizable two-player card game. Players start the game with a Worldbreaker that has a unique special ability and a deck of 30 cards. Each player aims to be the first to reach 10 power, which is gained by developing Location cards and by attacking the opponent. The game is divided into rounds, during each of which the players alternate taking turns. A turn is composed of one action, such as gaining mythium (the currency of the game), drawing a card, playing a card, or attacking the opponent. Worldbreakers has three card types: events, followers, and locations. Events are impactful one-time effects. Followers are people who join your cause and can either defend your board or attack your opponent. Finally, Locations are places where mythium can be collected.
