Complexity: medium-light

Summary: “A turn-based game that employs versatile tile placement and card management. Tiles will produce resources (gold and armies) and are the main mechanism for gaining points. The object of the game is to amass 10 points. There are three categories of cards. Move cards enable you to relocate and gain valuable resources. Action cards are used to hinder or counteract your opponents game play. Instant cards are used at any time to help or hinder opponents and also contain secret points to assist in the objective. Players are limited to 1 attack phase per turn and this mechanic is a basic 1-1 exchange. There are cards that can be used to eliminate armies without an attack and also to add to defense during an attack.”

Project: Fossil Canyon

Designer: Kevin Lynch

Artists: not credited

Publisher: Polymath Play

Genre/Mechanisms: card drafting, card game, educational, end game bonuses, events, hand management, set collection

Player Count: 2-6

Solo Mode: yes

Complexity: light

Risk: HIGH

Summary: “A competitive, lightly-strategic set-collection card game developed in collaboration with the Field Museum of Chicago. You are a fossil-hunting paleontologist with the goal of constructing complete dinosaur skeletons that attract visitors to your museum. Each dinosaur skeleton has a different point value (represented as visitors per year) and may consist of two, three, or four unique fossils. On each turn, you dig fossils from the dig site (scattered face-down fossil cards), initiate trades with other players, take a bonus dig if you manage to complete a skeleton for your museum, and rearrange your fossil cards so that all but three are visible to other players. Strategic choices include deciding which fossils to expose and the number of increasingly expensive trades you perform to try to complete a skeleton. Random events, such as erosion, may force you to alter your strategy. Fossil Canyon uses a unique jigsaw-puzzle scoring method, where each skeleton you add to your museum is represented by a puzzle piece with a length proportional to its value. No adding victory points or moving pawns on a board; the length of your puzzle-museum indicates your standing in the game. Fossil Canyon is a family-oriented STEM game.”
